I want to recap on John chapter 5. We went through it on Wednesday night and I want to catch those of you who weren’t here up.
Jesus makes some radical statements. First, Jesus heals a man… But the story is not about this man or his healing. Although, it is a miracle. But the climax of the story is that it was done on the Sabbath.
Vs. 16 – “For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.”
So they put Jesus on trial there and He gives them an amazing answer! I want you to notice that He doesn’t get into a debate with them over their ridiculous additions to the Sabbath Day laws. He doesn’t dialogue with them that it’s ok to do good on the Sabbath. He answer their assault in an amazing way. But it’s not going to make it easier for Him… It’s actually going to increase their hatred and they are going to seek to kill Him even more.
Please look with me at verse 17.
“But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
Here is what they heard Jesus say about his relationship to God.
Verse 18: “This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”
